PICSI involves an additional physiological sperm selection step before ICSI. This method relies on sperm's ability to bind to hyaluronan, a key component of the egg’s outer shell.
Only mature and genetically competent sperm can attach to hyaluronan, making them more likely to result in successful fertilization. PICSI is recommended in cases of: - Low fertilization rates after ICSI - Poor embryo development in previous cycles - Elevated DNA fragmentation in sperm - History of recurrent miscarriage - Advanced maternal age (over 35 years)
The process involves placing sperm in a hyaluronan-coated petri dish. Only the physiologically mature sperm that attach are selected for injection into the egg during ICSI.
